Reflective of a design philosophy intent on communicating more than just surface aesthetics, Melbourne-based architects Paul Hecker and Hamish Guthrie are well-known for creating dynamic contemporary spaces that sit comfortably with a building’s original qualities. Celebrating the Art Deco origins of this 1938 Toorak residence, originally designed by early Modernist architect Marcus Martin, the team has honored the home with a heritage renovation that focuses on exquisite natural materials, bespoke details, and light-filled transitions – effectively breathing new life into the old Australian home.
Hecker Guthrie have created a flagship store for Melbourne gelateria, Piccolina. “Piccolina” means little one in Italian, and although small in footprint this Gelato store in Collingwood certainly packs a punch with its bold colours and inserted sculptural elements.
The clean lines of Piccolina Gelateria in Collingwood, Melbourne, designed by Hecker Guthrie, picked up the award for Best Retail Design. The ice-creamery has concrete walls and a green-tiled counter. “[It has a] beautifully restrained interior that nodded to the history of gelato,” says Hansen.
